This is great news.  I have been using the pre-release version of Emacs 24.4 (24.4.50.) for a while already on my FreeBSD system as there is a port for the development version of Emacs available on the platform.  I am looking forward to having it available officially on all platforms I use soon.

The most obvious and most notable feature of Emacs 24.4 that I love using and having available is the built-in browser,  “eww”.   Even though I have made a more concerted effort this year to use emacs, I am still pretty much a newbie when it comes to deeply understanding everything Emacs.  Obviously, the more I use it the more comfortable I have become with editing in it but there is still a whole lot more I can learn.   A goal of mine for the next year when I find the time is to learn more about Emacs Lisp so I can really take advantage of the facilities that emacs provides and further improve my productivity within emacs.  Consequently, reading An Introduction to Programming in Emacs Lisp is on my TODO list for next year.

Now what motivated my post today was this Hacker News discussion highlighting a very good post on Mastering Emacs about  What’s New in Emacs 24.4.  Having only read it superficially, I still need to digest and understand a lot of the finer points on the new features and capabilities of emacs 24.4.  But in any event, it’s safe to say it is a must read for anyone wanting to get up to speed on what the new version of Emacs has in store.  Moreover, if you are a beginner or novice in Emacs like myself,  I can highly recommend the website Mastering Emacs as it is quite informative and chalk full of emacs related info.

I’m eagerly looking forward to the release date.  It’s a great time to be an Emacs user.
